A letter bearing good tidings from the New Yorker Store (boldface is boldly mine; there were a few more links in the email, but it's been a long day):

Best of all, the updated disk costs just $19.99 and is available only through The New Yorker.

Em: I am pretty steamed to have to be on the hook for $25 a year to get the annual updates. I was waiting for this, but I expected $9.95 or $12.95. So on top of the $46 we pay per year to subscribe to the print edition, tack on another $25? ($20 for the DVD, $5 shipping + tax).I will probably say “no” — because all I really wanted was the 1920s and 30s anyway. Who else feels this way?
And I still can’t bring myself to get rid of the actual back-issues I have piled all over the house and boxed in the attic.
Weren’t people who registered the original product by a certain date supposed to get the first annual update for free? I distinctly recall this, and now I don’t see anything about it.
Actually, turns out I was wrong. It’s only free shipping. http://archive.newyorker.com/contactinfo.aspx
