Robert Rauschenberg, 1925-2008

The artist is dead. (He was born the year The New Yorker was founded.) What a life, and what stunning things he made. Calvin Tomkins did a very personal Profile of him in 2005; it’s not online yet, but I have a feeling it will be.

Comments

This was sad news. Tomkins has long been a fan of Rauschenberg’s, and in addition to other pieces about him, wrote a profile of him in 1964, when Rauschenberg was 38.
