There's more suggestive and principled oddness in this paragraph by Gothamist's John Del Signore than in a number of novels I've read. I can't decide which of the guys in this story I like more.

There are no yuppies anymore! All the yuppies of the eighties are downwardly mobile by now.

The signs are just as much relics of the past as the yuppies! He's like one of those vietnam soldiers crouching in the jungle, still fighting twenty years after the war is over!

Someone should tell him we don't say "yuppie" anymore. The youngsters are already talking another language!
