When did the comic device of a character or characters set on a desert island first appear? I would love to find the first ever desert island cartoon.

When did “trope” come to serve as a stand-in for cliche or archetype—-or even stereotype? Do we blame this on New Critics or the disappearance of Classics professors? And why are “Rock Critics” so fond of the usage?

My mistake, Bill. I’ve corrected the word “trope” to “comic device”, which is more appropriate and more accurate, I think.
