This George Saunders Blog Will Surely Be Singular

Filed under: The Squib Report   Tagged: , , ,

The Millions kindly reminds us that New Yorker regular George Saunders is spending the week blogging at the Powell’s site. (We can even see where it all started; so much for the worry that the small moments of literary history may be lost in the digital age.) Judging from the first post, it should be a hoot.

Saunders is promoting his new book, The Braindead Megaphone; he’s doing a whole bunch of readings this month, some of which are listed in our Google Calendar. If you haven’t signed up for the jam-packed calendar yet, check it out here. —Martin Schneider

I’m wondering if our Squib reporter could look something up for me in the Complete New Yorker.
I was completely taken by Paul Theroux’s article
on Turkmenestan in an issue last spring (I think
it is one of the best magazine articles I’ve ever
read) and I’m wondering if Theroux has written
many articles for the magazine.

My father was a big fan of Theroux’s travel writing, so I remember certain of his New Yorker pieces very well, particularly his one about dining with the queen (filed under “Fact and Fiction,” which jibed with his new book at the time, “My Other Life,” which teased the reader as to what in Theroux’s work was true and what wasn’t). Another one I remember well was one about his dispute with V.S. Naipaul.

Looking at the CNY, I find that before 2006 he had appeared 11 times, most but not all fiction. Thanks for asking!

Thanks for the information Martin!
Keep up the great work!

I loved Theroux’s contribution to The Best of Granta Travel, which I can’t recommend highly enough. It’s so good! And edited by Bill Buford, which I’d forgotten.
